So it’s been a while again. I got preoccupied with playoff hockey and lots and lots of bike riding and oh yea my job. Unfortunately the NY Rangers lost the Stanley Cup to the LA Kings. Henrik killed it every step of the way but it just didn’t seem like the Rangers offense wanted it badly enough. Just in the last game the Kings had twice as many shots on goal as the Rangers, and yes John Quick is a great goalie but if the Rangers had battered him the way the Kings did Henrik NY could’ve went home with the cup. But I digress…on…to baseball!
My dear friend in Chicago held a BBQ to help me sell some tickets last weekend and I love her for that, especially since in the past few weeks the Cubs have been actually showing up to play baseball. They’ve gone 5-5 in their last ten games, which for them is not too bad. Of course the boys in blue are still 13 games back.
Superstar Starlin Castro surpassed his 2013 homerun total on Friday vs. the Pirates with a three run homer in the 3rd inning. I’m glad to see Castro playing well again as last year it seemed like he was burning out far too early in his career. He’s been picking up his slack from last year, a few errors here and there, mostly at the games I’ve been to L but all in all he seems to be digging his way out of the 2013 season slump. Friday’s homer marked his 11th of the season.
Most of the action for the Cubs seems to be tacking pace in Iowa. Wellington Castillo after his rib injury has reported to the Iowa Cubs triple A for his rehab assignment. In his first rehab game he singled in the 6th inning and went 1-5. Barring any major setbacks he should be reactivated to the Majors in no time.
Manny Ramirez will be arriving in Iowa this week for his assignment as a player/coach. While working out at the Cubs complex in Mesa AZ he spent some time with the injured Castillo. According to Castillo Ramirez spent some time noting and adjusting Castillo’s swing when he saw errors and is looking forward to hitting with veterans and newbies alike. One such newbie, Kris Bryant, the Cubs first round draft pick in 2013 for the first year player draft smashed a homer in Friday’s Iowa Cubs game vs. El Paso contributing to their 6-2 win. The third baseman seems like a winning pick and hopefully with someone like Ramirez as a mentor he’ll be a rising star for the Cubs in the next few years.
